'I've developed some practical strategies with my tutor to help me structure essays more coherently. I've also learnt how to be far more judicious when researching. My tutors at Uni have commented that my essays have improved significantly this semester, which I'm over the moon about. Thanks blt!' (Crispin Linwood)
'I've been through a whole process to improve my personal organisation and help me manage my time more effectively. I've now got a weekly study programme leading right up to my A2 exams which includes a revision timetable that I made myself. I'm feeling I'm on top of things, finally.' (Tim Marsden)
'Really useful tutorials! I'm far more confident with PowerPoint. We went through all the basics, reviewed all the do’s and dont’s and looked at how to engage an audience effectively. Very practical!' (Amelia Hartmann)
Realising academic potential at school, college or university is a function of knowledge and understanding, sustained motivation, proficient exam technique, and well-developed independent study skills. Study skills are the tools and techniques that enable a learner to study effectively; they are critical for the development of self-confidence and serve to optimise academic performance. Study skills are learnt skills which require nurture, guidance and practice. In this way, our study skills tutorials provide a bespoke programme to develop the following key areas:
Note-taking - making notes, organising notes, storing notes, reviewing notes.
Organisation - breaking down tasks, scheduling, meeting deadlines, maintaining the ‘study-life balance’.
Reading strategies - reading for detail, reading for gist, skimming, scanning.
Presentation skills - overcoming fear, creating a presentation, presenting with confidence.
Examination techniques - managing time, prioritising, reviewing, managing exam anxiety.
Essay writing - decoding questions, planning, structuring, editing, proofreading, interpreting and applying feedback.
Revision strategies - timetabling, organising for success, researching, developing memory aides.
Self-motivation - goal-setting, maintaining concentration, measuring success.
Our tutorials also help identify and explore each tutee’s individual learning style (ILS), so that they can learn to process information in a manner that is most effective, motivating and rewarding for them.
